Ohio 4H Enrollment Form for 2012
NEW- 12/4/11

Greetings all!

Last year we raised the 4-H registration fee to $15/member (including Cloverbuds) with a $50 family maximum.  We also added the opportunity for early enrollments at $10/member during the months of January and February.  That worked very well and will be implemented again in 2012.

2012 Summit Co. 4-H fees are:

Early Registration             $10/member including Cloverbuds          January and February

Registration                        $15/member including Cloverbuds          March 1-15

Continue to use the current registration forms provided in your packets, knowing, however, that the new data management system will ask for additional information and will require a new form.  That form is not ready – so we’ll just proceed as normal until then.

Thanks,

Jackie Krieger, Extension Educator

Volunteers Must Self Disclose Criminal Convictions.

As part of the revised Ohio State University Self-Disclosure of Criminal Convictions and Background Check Policy, effective July 1, 2011, all current volunteers and staff, even those provided by third party vendors, will be required to self-disclose criminal convictions that occur on or after July 1, 2011 within three business days of the conviction.

Federal funding for OSU Extension is in jeopardy. The current continuing resolution in the US House includes a reduction that would cause Ohio to lose about $1.2 million. This is a larger cut than what is proposed for many other facets of federal spending. We all recognize the need to reduce federal spending but don’t think this is a prudent way to do so. A loss of $1.2 million would mean a loss of 27-28 jobs in our state Extension system. We are already 20% smaller than we were 8 years ago and are reaching a critical point where we will have to provide fewer services across the state. There is also a major reduction proposed for the agricultural research programs that would greatly affect progress in our state’s largest industry.

You can help by contacting the people who represent you in Washington, DC. A sample letter is attached. There are two versions, one focused on agriculture and ag business, the other on 4-H, family consumer sciences and community development services. Please personalize it, there is a place where that is suggested in the attachment. We are asking you to send this letter as soon as possible to Ohio’s two senators and your member of the U.S. House. We hope you will add your personal thoughts to the letter and encourage you to send it via fax or email rather than through US mail. There is also a contact form on line that you can fill out for the individual officeholders – another great alternative.  If you aren’t able to send a letter or complete the online form, a phone call would also be appreciated.

Our elected leaders need to hear from us by the middle of next week, so US mail may take too long to arrive.

The letter should be sent to three people:

1.       Your Member of Congress – to identify who that is and get their contact info go to http://www.house.gov/. There is an option to search by zip code in the upper left hand corner. When you’ve identified your rep, click on their name to go to their office webpage.

Thank  you in advance for your support of OSU Extension!

Dear Friends:

Funding for OSU Extension, and Extension Services across the United States is being threatened.

On the federal  level , the House of Representatives voted to severely cut funding to Extension Services across the county.   In the Ohio Legislature similar actions are being considered.  The purpose of this correspondence is to urge you to contact your federal and state representatives and share with them your success stories.  4-H’ers who have literally been saved, or grown in ways that will help them contribute to our community, got into college or got a job because of 4-H -now is the time to let your representatives know what 4-H means to you.  Master Gardeners, tell the stories about what learning and serving means to you!  Stakeholders in community organizations, schools and elsewhere – we need your voices too.  If we have impacted your work or your life – now is the time to let it be known!

On the Federal level:
We would like you all to encourage Congress and the White House to treat the Cooperative Extension budget line (Smith-Lever) the same as other formula funding lines by restoring the Smith-Lever line to 2010 levels similar to all other formula fund lines in the budget. The request is for you to highlight and share success stories so that together we can deliver nationwide support for Cooperative Extension.   We need your stories of impact and success in the social media, emails or face-to-face visits to your Congressional representatives.   (US Mail is not recommended.)  House Members are in recess this week and may be back in their district for meetings.  Please consider joining your voice with those of thousands of other in support of federal funding for Extension Services.  Send them an email, a facebook message or a tweet.

The need is great and the timing is now – don’t hesitate!   Let your voice be heard!

The State budget:
Is also in serious trouble, and also threatens to negatively impact the services that OSU
Extension offers to our community (4-H, school programs,  Master Gardeners, commercial horticulture services, nutrition and food programs, support for community garden, urban agriculture and the local food movement, to name a few.)
